VARSITY ROUND UP By Johnathan Stack HISTORY MAKING SUPER STAFFS WIN VARSITY 2023 Staffordshire University secured Varsity triumph in dramatic style, at Keele University on a day that will live long in the memory. Staffs were trailing 6-3 on the last day of competition and faced a monumental task, having not won the varsity crown for the last 12 years. But that was all about to change. Staffs Uni sport teams seal varsity glory in spectacular fashion. The day began with Staffs cricket picking up the first victory of the day, which was follow by an impressive win from women’s volleyball which brought Staffs the perfect start they needed. While defeats for men’s volleyball and lacrosse put Keele on the brink of victory only needing one win to take the championship. Staffs had other ideas. Staffs needed four wins consecutively to bring home the gold and women’s and men’s basketball did their jobs and picked up wins, Staffs women’s futsal won on penalties after a nail-biting 5-5 draw. The score was 8-8 it all came down to the final game of Varsity 2023 in a winner takes all finale. Staffs started the final day, three points behind with eight points up for grabs.  After four days of competition, it all came down to this, Staffs vs Keele futsal, the winner claims varsity victory for their university. After a slow start Staffs found themselves 2-0 down with Keele scoring two goals in five minutes in the first half. Into the second half Staffs woke up and go back into the game scoring their first goal of the contest but then went 3-1 down. Staffs scored again setting up an incredible finish. Then with twelve seconds left Staffs scored an equalising penalty to make it 3-3 and take it to a penalty shootout. Staffs won on penalties to take the varsity crown 9-8. It was Staffordshire University’s first varsity title win since 2009. The others wins for Staffs were American Football who beat Keele 27-6, Staffs Cuesports who won 12-7 on day one, day two saw Staffs football pick up their first win over Keele since 2014 with a 1-0 victory. STAFFS ARE VARSITY CHAMPIONS. To everyone who competed over the four days, the varsity class of 2023 will forever be in Staffs history, well done to each and every one of you, for your efforts, your commitment, your passion.
