Climate change is code red for humanity (United Nations 2021) due to the serious impacts it is having on the world around us.

This presents society with its biggest ever challenge and has opened up a host of employment opportunities in emerging green sectors and roles as businesses and organisation strive to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to a changing climate.

As part of its commitment to positive climate action Staffordshire University has released a new degree programme called ‘Geography, Climate Change and Society’. This degree is focused on equipping students with the skills to help tackle the climate crisis right now and in their future careers.

In the course we explore the role of society and culture in responding to our climate crisis in a sustainable way at local, national, and international levels. We provide a thorough grounding in climate and land system science, together with a practical understanding of emerging green technologies and new modes of sustainable living. We provide internationally recognised and certified training in Carbon Literacy.

The modules on the course have been designed to help shape students into the future environmental professionals. They include:

  • Planet Earth
  • Responding to the climate crisis
  • Low-carbon transitions
  • Environmental Issues and the media
  • Creating climate resilient societies
  • Cities and the physical environment

Students from our geography courses have gone on to have successful careers in environmental consultancy, flood management, sustainability, planning and teaching.
