The Importance of Your Vote

The Leadership Race is well underway, and we are in the final hours of voting. The results will be revealed on Friday, where you will be introduced to your Officer team for the 17/18 academic year.

The importance of your vote cannot be played down in the slightest. We as a Students’ Union don’t make the big decisions, you and your representatives do. If you’re not happy with what’s changed in this year, then vote for someone who you think will make a huge difference next year. If you think the changes are heading in the right direction, then vote for who you think made a big difference year. The choice is yours.

If you don't vote, we lose the weight and power that helps us to really improve things for Staffs students; we become less representative of the population, as a whole, at Staffordshire University.

Think about Brexit. Think about Donald Trump. How many people weren’t happy with the outcome of those huge political votes? How will you feel next year if someone who does nothing to help you and only pushes their own agenda gets into the Officer Role on the basis that you didn’t vote and your vote could have pushed someone else in to a role-winning position?

Do you want 24/7 access to the University facilities? Free Mukky? Someone to realise your potential? Then vote for someone who’s offering that.

A lot of people think this is a popularity contest, and they’re inherently wrong. Our current President Jaime-Lee Cunningham was a commuting student before she went for Student Officer and she thought the exact same thing. But through sheer hard work and commitment to the role, she’s worked two years in Office and helped make a huge amount of change to the University and the Union. Even if you think it is a popularity contest, why not vote for the people who you think might not be too popular?

Even if you're a final year student, your vote is crucial. Just because you might not be here next year doesn't mean that the vote won't affect you as a postgraduate.

At the end of the day, your Student Voice is important, and so is your vote. Please vote in the Leadership race today, tomorrow or Thursday and give yourself and your peers the upper hand.
