"Today, and everyday, we want to reinforce that our Union does not accept any form of racism, discrimination or abuse to any of our students, Staffs community and anyone in the world. As an Officer Team we have been moved by the passion of students we have worked with and their support for race equality - and want to support all our students to do more.
We show solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter cause and those people exercising their right to peacefully protest against injustices around the world, because this is not an American issue and not a small issue. It is a global issue affecting every aspect of society and learning and recognise that racism exists right here on our doorstep.
We encourage everyone to stand up, speak out and not to turn a blind eye as bystanders to racism. We each must use our privileges to defend our family, friends, peers and everyone who suffers injustice as a result of race.
We’re proud to already be working with the University to create a ‘Hate Crime Policy’, and have been fortunate to share the experiences of our Black students and staff through our ‘#ProudToBeBlack’ campaign.
We understand these are incredibly difficult times, and we want to share some support and wellbeing services that can help during this time.
