We want to make all students are aware of the measures they can take to Be Safe at University from the moment they enroll.

The essentials

  • Make sure your phone is charged and that you're able to make calls in case of emergency

  • Get to know your surroundings and the people in them so that you can notice if there's anything out of the ordinary

  • Be wary of any requests for personal information, in person and online, unless you're 100% sure it's legitimate

Securing your home and belongings

  • Register your belongings by marking them with a UV pen. Use something individual to you like your student number and University.

  • You can also register your belongings online on immobilise.com.

  • Get insurance for your stuff... we recommend Endsleigh

  • Keep any expensive items out of sight and in a secure place when you're not using them

  • Do the same with any items that hold personal information such as passports and bank cards

  • If you have a bike, invest in a good quality bike lock

  • Always lock, check and lock your windows and doors before you leave - if something isn't locking properly, report it as soon as you can

Going out and about

  • Know how you'll get home and plan ahead, especially whilst you're still getting to know the campus and local area

  • If it's getting dark, or you're worried, let someone know where you are and when you'll be back somewhere safe and comfortable

  • Try not to get too distracted, stay aware of what's going on around you

  • Consider carrying a personal alarm - the Students' Union, ResLife or Staffs Uni Police Officer may give you one for free. Alternatively, there are apps you can download to your phone that provide a similar function

Be Safe Online

  • Install security software on your laptop/computer

  • Check out these resources on protecting yourself and your devices online at getsafeonline.org.
