We asked Darren

Why did you run for Officer?

Having been involved in clubs and the Union venues as student staff, I wanted to continue my involvement and help my fellow students. Also, I'm nosey.

What are your key focuses this year?

I want the team to be confident in what they do, and support any student that needs it. I also want to continue the expansion of our national presence, especially in the National Union of Students. As well as this, I want to start to look how the Union can communicate better with students and ensure they can hold their representatives to account. And ensuring students on other campuses feel connected. And maybe even have some fun.

What do you hope to achieve by this time next year?

Everything I'd previously mentioned, and so much more.

What surprised you the most when you started University?

Not having my mother there to cook for me and wash my clothes. I got caught in the deep end there.

What are three tips you would give to someone starting University?

- Do some research on what to bring, the local area and the University.

- Arrive with an open mind. People come to Staffs from so many different backgrounds.

- If you're ever struggling, come and see us at the Students' Union!

Were you involved in any clubs or societies or any other Union or University facilitated things?

I was involved in Rugby before I arrived and I will be until I leave. I also helped set up the Labour Students Society.

Did you work whilst studying?

Yes, I worked as Student Staff in Stafford Campus’s old venue ‘Legends & The Lounge’ and then moved to part time Duty Manager in my 2nd year.

Tell us one thing about you that people may not know:

The Students' Union isn't my first political position. I was also the chairperson of my local youth council at home. I've always had a genuine interest in representing those around me.

What would you name your boat if you had one?

I'm terrible at naming things. Probably "Boat 1". Considering I'm meant to be studying a creative subject in Music Technology, I'm not very creative.

What is your spirit animal?

A Panda.

How would your best friends describe you?

I'm not going to use most of the words that they used, so I'll pick one word out, and that's 'pest'.

What would you choose as your final meal?

Twenty Chicken Nuggets from McDonalds.

Can you speak more than one language?

I can speak very limited German.

What's your favourite recipe, and alternatively, what's your favourite way to exercise?

My favourite recipe is a three step one. First, you go to the app store on your phone. Second, you download Just Eat. And third and finally, you order a Brunchies.

What is your favourite Union venue and why?

Legends & The Lounge (The venue on the old Stafford campus) will always be my favourite venue. I don't actually know how to say why, but if you know, you know.

What is your favourite motivational quote?

"Music is my Religion" made famous by Mr Jimi Hendrix. I've got it tattooed on my arm.
