We asked Sam
Why did you run for officer?
I've always been an active student, and have wanted to get involved in not just activities but the forums and the putting forward of ideas for change. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to make the University better.
What are your key focuses this year?
My key focuses this year are gaining transparency for the students with the university, so they can see where their money is going. I also want to take leaps forward in terms of environmental issues and sustainability on campus. I think we should also be having more day time events, promote under-used facilities and give better access to current ones, and give students more power in our decision making.
What do you hope to achieve by this time next year?
I want to achieve Gold in the NUS Green Impact Award, as well as having a full calendar of both day and night evnts throughout the year. I'd also like to have achieved a fantastic relationship with students as officer, so people are more aware of the Union.
What surprised you the most when you started University?
Liking Stoke more than people said I would. I was told that I'd hate it - I actually love it! Also how cheap a pint is here too.
What are three tips you would give to someone starting University?
- Join as many clubs and socities as you can. Get stuck in - it's a great way to meet people.
- Be engaged with Union activities. Go to forums. Get your name out there!
- Learn how to cook.
Were you involved in any clubs or societies or any other Union or University facilitated things?
Yeah, a few... I was a Student Ambassador for two years, an academic representative and a peer mentor. I was also a member of the Snow Sports society, the Golf team, the Badminton club and was also the captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team last year.
Did you work whilst studying?
Yes, I worked as a NSS Survey Champion and as a Student Ambassador.
Tell us one thing about you that people may not know:
I'm a terrible gossip... although you probably already know that.
What would you name your boat if you had one?
Slippery when wet.
What is your spirit animal?
Either a giraffe - or Sean Paul.
How would your best friends describe you?
Cheap and a green geek.
What would you choose as your final meal?
An all-you-can-eat Chinese.
Can you speak more than one language?
What is your favourite recipe, and alternatively, what's your favourite way to exercise?
Probably Spaghetti Carbonara. In terms of exercise, playing sport!
What is your favourite Union venue and why?
I would say The Ember Lounge, because they always play sport on the big screen. They also do cheap but good food, and it's a great place to socialise.
What is your favourite motivational quote?
"You've got to be in it to win it", "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" or the entirety of Rihanna's "Work".
