Welcome to Staffordshire University's Equestrian Club!
We welcome everyone regardless of ability - whether you've never been on a horse before or if you've been riding all your life we can cater to your needs. We welcome both able bodied and disabled riders with one of our main aims to establish and develop good horsemanship whilst developing riding ability.
As well as weekly lessons throughout the academic year, we will also have occassional fun days, hacks and meals out. We'll be having lots of awesome socials whether it's to go to the Horse of the year show, the races or fancy dress at Gobble! This year we've had our fair share of interesting socials!
This years membership will be £35. The membership fee gets you:
- Discounted lessons
- Discounted hacks
- Discount on kit
- Free transport to and from training
- BUCS entry fees
BUCS (British Universities College Sport)
The 2016/17 academic year will be our fourth year competing in association with BUCS. This consists of dressage and show jumping and is unique in equestrianism as riders have to compete on borrowed horses from each university, so each team will be at an advantage when it is their home competition.
The aim of the competition is to judge a rider’s ability to get the best out of an unknown horse in a limited period of time. You will be expected to do a dressage test (similar to British Dressage Prelim). There is also a Show Jumping phase, which is marked on style and performance. There will be 4 competitions (one for each University in your area group) and they will be spread out evenly across the academic year so we will be able to train and improve on our performance. We enter one team of 4 and reserves, based on trials held in October.
We will also be holding friendlies against other Universities so we will need a friendlies team too!
Lessons, Hacks, Horse Care days and Club Competitions
We have incredibly supportive and excellent instructors that teach us at Lodge Farm and they offer very good value for money. Lessons take place Wednesday afternoons priced at £15 for a group lesson.
Hacks have previously taken place at Cannock chase which is a great area to ride around in with some great scenery and lovely horses!
As of the 2016/2017 academic year we will also be organising an equestrian holiday!
During the 2015/2016 academic year, the equestrian club went on holiday to the lake district where we rode horses and quad bikes, tried our hand at archery and got very competitive with go-karts! We also went on our annual drinking holiday, this year just happened to be Magaluf! We hope to organise these holidays - be it to re-visit with new members or somewhere new entirely - for our 2016/2017 members!
Horse riding is a risky sport but we do our best as a club to minimise any risks that may occur. Within the very first session you will be given a safety talk and told the do's and dont's about behaviour on the yard, on your horse and general safety.
