Disclosure and Barring Service

Some volunteering opportunities require you to submit to a Disclosure and Barring Service check before you can begin volunteering; this is a legal requirement designed to protect you, vulnerable service-users and your chosen community organisation.

Only opportunities that involve you working with vulnerable people will require you to undergo a DBS check.

Staffordshire University Students' Union is able to subsidise DBS checks for student volunteers in Students' Union managed roles, where the student meets the below criteria. To qualify for a Students' Union subsidised DBS Check a volunteer must:

  • Be a current Staffordshire University student;

  • Have had your volunteering role confirmed;

  • Not benefit directly from the position for which the DBS application is being submitted;

  • Not receive any payment (except for travel and other approved out-of-pocket expenses);

  • Not be on a work placement linked to a programme of study;

  • Not be on a course that requires them to do this job role;

  • Not be in a trainee position that will lead to a full time role/qualification.

There are three stages to every DBS Check through the Students' Union:

Stage 1: Eligibility Check

You complete a very quick online eligibility check by clicking here.

Stage 2: Your Application

If you are eligible, you'll be sent login details to enable you to fill out the online application form. This form is quite detailed and the information you provide will be submitted to the Home Office and to relevant Police Services for the purposes of the check.

Stage 3: In Person Identity Check

Once you have completed your online application, you'll need to submit to an identity check. The check is completed by our Employability and HR Team, who will require you to present a minimum of three original and valid identity documents. Information on the documents you'll need will be sent to you with your login details for the application system.
