Congratulations: Student groups nominated for national awards!

Student Engagement |

The Project Earth Society and the Mature, Parent & Carer Network have been shortlisted in categories for the 2020 National Societies & Volunteering Awards.

Project Earth Society | The Collaboration Award

The Project Earth Society pushed for a Committee Collaboration event to be held by the Engagement team. They worked with British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Engagement Team and University Estates to implement changes to benefit wildlife and they worked with other societies to promote and hold an on-campus litter pick.

Not only has Project Earth Society’s collaborative working with other departments and organisations meant there have been positive outcomes, their initial request to just get together and meet with other student group committees has led to an array of other separate events that have been successful through group collaboration.

Their activities have allowed more students to get involved with environmental actions than would have if working separately benefitting the student community, local area and natural environment.

Mature, Parent, Carer Network | The Opportunities for All Award

Staffordshire University has a large mature student population - over a third of our students.

The Mature, Parent & Carer Network have over many years been working to bring together students who normally are left out as “non-typical” students, and to allow those who have shared experiences to meet, relax and chat in a different environment. In this case, the Network were trying to hold social events for parents that would mean they had access to affordable entertainment for their children, realising that not every student-parent can afford to take their kids out and about for things to do.

The group quickly highlighted that the typical 9-5 timeframe wouldn’t work for this kind of event and that in order to best help these students they would like to hold their event on the weekend.

They also wanted to find something unusual that these families would not normally be able to do themselves. MPC chose to link up with the Mountaineering society (SUMC) to hold climbing sessions for our students’ children. This was a first for both groups, especially SUMC who normally work with other students for their sessions. Whilst it is often difficult engaging parents in events, MPC took the step of engaging other students (not from the MPC segment) into their activity to give both groups additional opportunities and to benefit students.

"Being told we have been shortlisted for this award means the world. Mpc students are hard to engage with, but I've got it to a point where students are actively engaging and supporting each other. The nomination alone is testament to how far we have come" - Nat Campbell, Lead for Mature, Parent, Carer Network

This event helped encourage a small but significant change in approaching mature students by the staff at the University and Students' Union.
