"Deaf Awareness Week is a unique campaign in that so many different organisations participate, each able to promote their own work within the broad spectrum of deafness.
DAW 2020 focus was around recognising and celebrating those with acquired deafness but we know in light of everything going on that we will through an online campaign engage with our members and encourage them to celebrate Deafness, raise awareness of best practice and use the week for demonstrating change and positivity." - UK Council on Deafness
Last year, we helped students put together some videos in order to teach people the skill of using British Sign Language, be sure to have a look.
The first video takes you through the alphabet one by one to give you the basic idea about BSL.
Next with have basic conversational words you can use to get to know somebody using BSL.
This next video runs through emotions and feelings so you can learn to see how someone is feeling through BSL. Steph also shows us how to use BSL to refer to relatives.
Finally we have top tips for using sign language and what to steer clear of when interacting with someone using sign language.
If these videos have piqued your interest and you would like to look in to learning sign language for yourself, there are many online schools where you can learn everything you need to know. For example you can head to the School of Sign Language to get started.
