Interview

"I was shocked and so pleased to receive this award from Stonewall, and allows me to raise the profile of transgender within the midlands."

Fee Wood, Former SU President

We chatted with Fee about her award and about the work she's done at Staffs

What is the 'Role Model' award?

Each year Stonewall UK recognise individuals for their contribution to the LGBT+ community. This year, Staffordshire University put forward individuals, students and staff, who's work they'd like to acknowledge. Fiona Wood was suggested for everything she has done for trans students at Staffs and nationally over the years and this year has won "Midlands Role Model of the Year".

We know you're not one to talk yourself up, but tell us about some of the work you've done

Fee was the 1st Trans President at Staffs as well as at any Students' Union in the country, she was the very 1st Trans Officer in the National Union of Students (NUS) and was a major part of writing the Trans Inclusion Policy at Staffs - one of the first at any UK University (as far as we know). Last year she hosted the Trans Inclusion Conference at Staffordshire University and this year she's helping with the Trans in Education Conference at Keele.

Fee's work continues to make us #ProudToBeStaffs. You can read a bit more about her story as a volunteer here.
