Looking to fundraise for charity over summer?

The Student Engagement Team can support you | studentengagement@staffs.ac.uk

Over the summer there have been some fantastic fundraising efforts from students at Staffs.

From one student fundraising over £800 from shaving their head for The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust to the Cricket Club cycling the distance of Lands End to John O'Groats in a single week, it looks like students have jumped at the chance to support their communities and charities when lockdown restricted what they could do.

We spoke to a couple of them to ask their advice for any students thinking of fundraising themselves...

Jools & Josh | Fundraised for #BlackLivesMatter

Total: £415.97

Q: Tell us about your fundraising...
A:
Myself and 2 other student streamers, including another Staffs student Josh Faulkner, raised £415.97 collectively for the Black Lives Matter movement, and it could not have been possible without the generous donations from the viewers.

Q: What inspired you to fundraise?
A:
The idea came about as we currently work for Vanix Esports (an Esports organisation founded by students at Staffs, my role is Live Content Manager, and my colleagues as Streamers) and so we already have an established friendship and collaborations on our platforms.

We decided we could do our bit to help the movement by creating a series of charity streams on our Twitch.tv platforms to fundraise for various Black Lives Matter charities of the streamers choice.
The BLM movement is a necessary, progressive step towards a world of equality, to which the three of us wanted to contribute more than raising awareness on such an important world issue.

Q: How could others fundraise too?
A:
Whilst COVID 19 has made physical fundraising difficult, live streaming has always been an engaging and effective form of raising funds, and that is true more so now than ever. Additionally, if  people aren't familiar with live streaming sites like Twitch.tv, there are more mainstream alternatives such as YouTube Live and Facebook Gaming which gives people creative options when fundraising at home.

We should all be utilising our talents, skills and hobbies to make the changes we want to see, wherever possible.

Staffs Uni Cricket Club | Fundraised for theCALMZone (supporting men's mental health)

Total: £1530

Q: Tell us about your fundraising...
A: The fundraisng was for The CALMzone, which supports Mens mental health, we raised a Total of £1530 + £200 in gift aid, this represents over 200 phone calls which could help someone turn their life around.

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to fundraise?
A:  If people want to go and fundraise our best advice is don’t do it alone and find something you are passionate about. None of us could have done what we did individually, what kept us going was that we were all in it together, by sharing the work load and responsibility it allows you to really enjoy what you do.

Always remember that every little amount helps charities, don’t be afraid to raise just £50 or £100, these sorts of amount can make great differences to lives and make sure that you change that life rather than saying someone else will.
