Move In May: Join the Campus-to-Campus Challenge

In the lead up to Mental Health Awareness Week where the theme is “Moving more for Mental Health” we have devised a fundraiser to get everyone moving more in May!

Starting from Wednesday 8 May 2024, we're calling on all movers, shakers, and thrill-seekers to lace up those sneakers, dust off those bikes, and dive headfirst into the ultimate campus-to-campus challenge!

We'll be raising awareness of the benefits of movement for physical and mental well-being and raising money for the Horizon Fund, created to support students with bursaries, scholarships, and opportunity awards.

Whether you prefer pounding the pavement, gliding through water, or cruising on two wheels, there's a path for everyone. How ever you decide to move, every step, every minute and every metre count. So whether you’re up for pushing your limits or, only have time for a quick walk around campus in between meetings and lectures, everyone collectively can help us rack up the miles and virtually visit all campuses.

Our journey will begin with tackling journey from our Leek Road and College Road campuses in Stoke-on-Trent campuses to Here East in London (approx 159 miles). But wait, there’s more. With every milestone smashed, we'll unlock the next campus on our map to see just how far we can all go whilst raising some much-needed funds for the Horizon Fund.

By the end of the month, our aim is to have racked up enough miles to land at one of our partner institutions, located almost 3,500 miles away in the birthplace of the Olympics itself – Athens.

Donations for the challenge are being collected over on our Move In May Giving Page and, to help get as many people moving as possible and start our trek with a bang, we’re looking to coordinate various activities on each of our campuses on Wednesday 8 May 2024.

Stoke-on-Trent:
The Sir Stanley Matthew Sports Centre will be open on the University’s Leek Road site and will be free to use on Wednesday 8 May 2024 from from 7am – 9pm. Inside there will be treadmills, spin bikes and rowers that you'll be able to use to take on the challenge.

If swimming is how you’d like to get involved, the University has a partnership with Fenton Manor for FREE swimming sessions for staff and students.  Simply show your University ID card at reception at the following times to access the pool:

Monday to Thursday:
8am to 8.50am
9.15am to 12pm
1.30pm to 4.15pm

Friday:
8am to 8.50am
9.15am to 12pm

Don't forget, we also have our on campus Nature Reserve and nearby Hanley Park for short walks in the outdoors.

Stafford:

We are liaising with local facilities to potentially bring gym equipment onto campus. Watch this space for updates but in the meantime check out local routes in Stafford town centre and slightly further out in Cannock Chase.

London:
We are in the process of liaising with Here East partners to potentially offer access to gym machines for the challenge. Watch this space for updates but in the meantime check out local routes in the Queen Elizabeth Park.

So let’s get moving! Are you ready to go the distance? Grab your gear, rally your colleagues, choose your path and let's make every mile count. The challenge will run until Friday 31 May 2024.

How to submit your miles
To submit your miles, simply email developmentoffice@staffs.ac.uk with a photo of you at the start of your miles and again at the end of your miles.

You’ll also need to include a photo of your smart watch, phone steps, a photo of distance captured on a gym machine, or whatever method you are using to track your distance.

Photos may be shared across the Horizon Fund social media channels and the University’s internal channels to raise awareness about the challenge throughout May.

Why are we fundraising?
To support students during their time at Staffordshire University.

The money raised from the campaign will support the unrestricted donations within the Horizon Fund which supports students with opportunities that they would otherwise miss. University is more than the degree, it is the networks made, the connections sought, and the experiences had that make work equipped, world ready graduates. These are our alumni ambassadors of the future, and the ones who will change it.

Who will this help?
Our students at all levels – from undergraduate to PhD - ensuring they can continue to achieve their ambitions and aspirations, support themselves, making their dreams a reality by the end of their degree.
