The trophy cabinet additions with SU Dance Club’s name on prove that our team have resilience, determination, style and skill.

Following months of planning, preparation and perfecting routines SUDC took the opportunity to demonstrate their talents at two recent dance competitions and have taken the club to the next level. You can read about their account of the events below.

SUDC have also scored Student Group of the month, March 2023; we are extremely proud of their competition successes but it is the whole team’s commitment to supporting each other, celebrating each other’s successes, positive working approach and collaborations which are so impressive.

Demonstrating the We Are Staffs ethos of ‘Unity, Pride and Belonging’ has been at the core of the team’s culture fostered by both the committee and their members resulting in statements from members such as: “This team will always have a place in my heart” and “SUDC will always be my dance family” and it is certain that lifelong friendships have been made.

Not only are the club members keen to work with others as part of their end of year showcase, but they also sharing the power of dance with other societies, as they partnering with Netball, ACS, Folklore & Disney Societies and specially choreographing dances for them, to songs of their choice, which is a great way to bring students together and open up opportunities that people may otherwise not experience.

Collaborating with others, Supporting their community, Making a Change through Exec meetings/ feedback and proudly representing Staffs are a few of the reasons why SUDC have achieved student group of the month.

SUDC Sheffield Dance Competition:

Staffs Uni Dance Club entered in 4 categories:

  • Jazz beginner/intermediate,
  • Contemporary beginner/intermediate,
  • Hip-hop beginner/intermediate,
  • Wildcard.

Our SUDC team started off the day at 6:30am to get on the coach, hair and make-up galore! On arrival we set everything up, got into our first costumes, and made finishing touches to our hair and make-up.

The Jazz team were up first, they did a Fossie style interpretation of the pink panther theme. Scoring: 110/160

Next was Contemporary: our Dance squad did a dance about the abortion rights protests in America, we came so close to receiving the award for best concept, but University of Birmingham managed to steal that from our SUDC! But we scored a very respectable: 113/160

Then Hip-hop was up. The dance they created was a commercial dance which was not a compatible category. Regardless, this was scored very well! The Union and the team is super proud of the dancers! They did a sassy dance to female artists with quotes from mean girls throughout, “it was such a laugh. “Scoring: 105/160

Finally, The wildcard entry.  They had a quartet with Lucy (finance officer), Issy (Welfare officer, Mia, and Carlota! They did a beautiful piece to falling by Harry styles, about two couples, where they are having an affair with one another. After a long day of dancing their hearts out to four different categories they got back to stoke around 21:30, 15 hours together!

Nottingham GHGH Dance Competition:

Entering three categories:

  • Jazz
  • Contemporary
  • Commercial

The day started at 7:00am to get on the coach to Nottingham Royal theatre and concert hall! On arrival SUDC were shown to their section and started straight away on hair and make-up. Once ready, the dance squad went to the dressing room to get into their contemporary costumes for the first dance. They danced their hearts out and got 233/300 Securing them 2nd place!

Then commercial was straight after so a was VERY quick turnaround had to be done for some of our girls who are in both! That didn’t not put them off at all as they still did an amazing score; 153/300. Securing themselves 3rd place.

The last category was Jazz and then they were done. SUDC still had the energy and smashed their way to another 3rd place victory scoring :194/300.

All their categories were finished early in the day, so we were all able to sit and enjoy all the other categories including cultural dances, tap, and street! Then the awards…

After a whole day of dancing SUDC danced away with:

  • Contemporary 2nd place trophy!
  • Commercial 3rd place trophy!
  • Jazz 3rd place trophy!

“I can very proudly say that no other dance committee or manager has been able to bring home more than 1 trophy at one single competition, let alone 3!!!”

SUDC make us #proudtobestaffs
