 Sport at Staffs: Why you should give it a go this September

There's LOADS of benefits to getting active and playing team sports. It can enhance both your physical and mental wellbeing, keeping you going during stressful times with your studies. Plus it's loads of fun.
 
Now, they'll all be competing for your membership at the Clubs & Societies Sign-up on Wednesday 18th September at the Sports Centre but #TeamStaffs are great bunch, so we took a little time to get to know some of the teams...

 

  Basketball | Staffs Steelers (Mens) & Staffs Stingrays (Womens)

 
ABOUT
 
"Staffs basketball is an amazing club to get involved with, we have massive interest each year from freshers. We want everyone to get involved with us, our team is exciting to watch as well as play. We’re offering the most ever this year so don’t miss out."
 
LOOKING FORWARD 
 
"We are looking forward to this season as we aim to win our division, as well as continue our proud history in varsity matches between rivals Keele University. We also are keen to promote our new 3V3 league which will be covered on our social media and at freshers fair so look out. We’re especially happy to be pushing our women’s team the Staffs Stingrays this year, more then ever as we hope to build that team this year."
 
BEST TRICK TO DO IN BASKETBALL?
 
"There is so many tricks in basketball you can achieve, one which stands out from the crowd is being able to spin the ball on your finger."

"Our group is like a small family. We won most improved club last academic year and our hoping to pick up some more awards this year. We compete in both BUCS, national and our own personal club competitions which are held at the LRV."
 
LOOKING FORWARD 
 
"This will be our first year in the BUCS league, we are looking forward to a high table league finish."
 
BEST TRICK TO DO IN FENCING?
 
"The riposte is a form of counter-attack. Unlike the standard counter-attack, a riposte follows a successful parry of your opponent’s attack rather than a direct launch into the attack."

"People should join the club because it's a great way to meet new people with similar interests and playing sport is a great way to get a break from your studies. You get to meet likeminded people who love to play sport and be part of a team on and off the pitch."

BUT WHY HOCKEY?
 
"This club is a great way to help build confidence and improve your teamwork. As well as the sport aspect there will always be a good social foundation of the sport allowing for improved fraternizations."

ABOUT THE TEAMS
"We are a friendly group who vary on experience and we pride ourselves on supporting each other through university life. Everybody can suffer from nerves and concerns about starting their university journey and we aim to make it as enjoyable as it can be through weekly social events, great matchday experiences and holistic support."
 
"We are a sports team that focuses on involving everyone whether they have experience in the sport or not. We play competitively and train once a week and we really do show what its like to be proud to be staffs. We also pride ourselves on winning the Performance of the Year Award at Staffordshire Universities Sports ball 2019."

BUT WHY RUGBY?
 
 
"One of the most important things a participant can learn is to support those beside themselves. When we notice a person feeling down we actively make sure they have our support whether that be in a match day sense or outside of Rugby"
 
"They can be assured they will have friends for life and a team they can talk about for many years to come and a sense of pride for the team, and a place of being no matter how many years pass."

BEST TRICK TO DO IN FOOTBALL (& FUTSAL)?
 
"There are far too many impressive tricks in football to choose from - Cruyff turns, bicycle kicks, rabonas, rainbow flicks, step overs. You don’t have to know any of them, but sometimes it’s quite nice to show off a bit with one."
