Student Group of the Month – January 2024

Leader – Game Development Society

Our student group leaders work incredibly hard to host events for their members. To make this happen there’s planning, preparation, health & safety considerations, and risk assessments to name just some of the behind-the-scenes work that our student volunteers tirelessly deliver.

But imagine planning and delivering an event that takes place over 48 hours!

That’s exactly what our Game Development Society committee did when hosting this year’s Global Game Jam, where they joined in with game developers worldwide to utilise their skills, creativity and ingenuity to create video games during a set period.

This year, hosting 77 student and alumni jammers for the 48-hour session has taken a lot of hard work and dedication, and our 2023-24 Game Dev committee followed in the footsteps of those before them to deliver another fantastic GGJ event for their members.

The committee leaders opened the doors at 17:00 on 26th January to invite students, graduates, lecturers and friends of the university to a key talk in the Cadman building where a brief of the event was presented and this year’s theme for the games was revealed. Jammers were tasked with creating their most creative games around the theme of ‘Make me laugh’, resulting in loads of themed games…and fun for the developers too.

After many hours of designing, re-designing, pizza and a little sleep – the resulting games were amazing.

At the end of the event, on 28th January the attendees gathered for a showcase of the projects created where they could see all of their hard work pay off.

The society has a long history of hosting the Global Game Jam event and it is co-curricular, peer-led events such as this, which help to make Staffs such an appealing choice for Games Design students.

Game Development Society are truly worthy of Student Group of the Month!
