welcome fair review

The Welcome Fair rolled onto campus with a bang yesterday as students new and old got involved with all the things on offer.

Revellers were able to trek through the commercial zone in LRV to grab some amazing freebies and take part in various activities to try and bag themselves something special. There were a host of companies within the zone, ranging from international to local and every one of them had something on offer to keep those in attendance entertained.

For those that were hungry, Dixy Chicken and Domino’s Pizza were giving away free food as well as vouchers to keep students well-fed throughout the year. As well as food, students need drink too, and both Monster Energy and Lucozade were on hand to generously cover that.

As if free Lucozade wasn’t enough, they also provided entertainment with a countdown game where players had to hit the button to stop the number at ‘0’ to win some great goodies. Monster contributed too, bringing along their impressive truck to distribute their free drinks.

There wasn’t just one kind of drink covered either, with a lot of local clubs and bars promoting their latest nights with various offers, such as Fiction (who brought a confetti machine with them), Revolution and even the Students’ Union’s own club night Mukky.

International companies Spotify and Deliveroo were also in attendance, with some seriously interesting things on offer. Deliveroo came prepared, with a Crystal Maze-esque wind machine that students had the chance to go inside and grab themselves a prize or two –a great nostalgic touch for those who remember the great TV game show.

Spotify brought along their 1080-degree camera as well as their huge speakers and impeccable music taste to provide a soundtrack for the day while also offering their ‘Student Spotify’ deal.

Talking of deals, intu Potteries, the local shopping centre in Hanley were on hand to advertise their Student Night on 4th October where you can find the very best student discounts for one night only.

The Regent Theatre were also nearby to showcase their events this year, with Jimmy Carr, The Woman in Black and Dirty Dancing all coming to Stoke-On-Trent in the near future.

To offer a bit of balance to proceedings, the Staffordshire Partnership NHS Trust were giving out free condoms to make sure that you remain healthy and protected in that aspect of your life, as well as giving out little toy sperm.

Once people got their fill of food and freebies, they could move on to the Brindley Marquee to check out the bounty of student-led societies on offer through the Students’ Union. From the brand new reading group and arts and crafts society Needles and Novels, to the stalwarts of the Film Society, Psychology Society and much more. There were people from each and every group on campus available to speak to and share their wisdom in their specific interest or group to those interested in joining.

If a more athletic approach was more what students were looking for, then instead they could head over to the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre to sign up for sports ranging from Football to Ultimate Frisbee.

There were also members of the sports clubs wandering around campus getting people involved in playing themed games to do with that specific sport with the chance to win some goodies!

It was a wonderful day where new faces met old and freebies were enjoyed by all.
