After working in a hotel for my first 2 years at Uni, I wanted to work somewhere related to my University, to be more part of the University community and the shop would be a nice change after working in bars and restaurants.

Have you enjoyed the development opportunities that the Students’ Union have offered?

Yes, I was encouraged from the start to aim to progress to Team Leader, which I have been able to do. I am always being trained and learning new things.

How long have you worked in the Union shops?

Since September 2015

What made you apply for the job?

The hours of work suited me; I didn’t want to work more than 10 hours per week because of my Uni work, and the Union understands that for students, our studies are our priority. I felt that the shop seemed like the most enjoyable environment and the role that best suited me. Working here has also helped me make best use of my spare time whilst away from home; learning new skills and earning money too.

What’s the best thing about working for the Students’ Union?

The Union is very understanding when it comes to working hours – I feel that if I had a job outside of the Union, they would expect me to put the job first rather than my studies.

What do you think you have gained from your experience working here?

I have gained a lot more confidence in myself and in what I feel I can achieve. I also think that this role has helped me think more independently and to trust and use my initiative.

Have you enjoyed the development opportunities that the Students’ Union have offered?

I have enjoyed being trusted with more responsibility and I feel that this has helped me grow as a person.

How do you think these might benefit you in the future?

I think that the independence and social skills that I have gained through this job will definitely help me in the future.

Would you recommend working here to a friend?

Yes, I really enjoy it here
