Join Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls. Dr Daria Cherkaska and John Pollick on Holocaust Memorial Day for a presentation on Beyond Baba Yir.

Ukrainian soil has been the historic home of Jews since the Middle Ages. As a result, Ukrainian heritage includes a representative collection of Jewish sites and artefacts: synagogues, prayer houses, cemeteries, ritual objects, books, etc.

Unfortunately, tragic events such as anti-Jewish pogroms, the Holocaust, Soviet repressions and persecution, and mass Jewish emigration from Ukraine reduced the Jewish community dramatically. In some cases, only material objects and mass graves act as reminders of Jewish life in particular towns and former shtetls (small towns in Eastern Europe, in which Yiddish-speaking Jews constituted a significant proportion of the population until WWI).
